The Period of Time
The period of time from the oldest Ancestor born in England around the year 1530 to the present encompasses some 472 years. This page deals with the known ancestors who lived in England.
Research Conducted
Since 1932, the time of the publication of volume II of the Foote Family, several new discoveries have been made about the English ancestors and relatives of Nathaniel Foote the Settler, his brother Joshua Foote, and their sister Mary, wife of Joshua Hewes.
Many decendants of Nathaniel Foote submit that their lineage comes from a John Foote, through two Robert Footes, his grandfather and father. Others omit the first John and begin the line with a Robert Foote Sr., grandfather of Nathaniel Foote and his siblings.
Recent scholarship based on the will of John Foote of Royston, a tallow chandler, places him as the father of Robert Foote of Shalford, grandfather of Natahaniel Foote the Settler, and the most remote Foote ancestor for which documentation can be found.
The insertion of two Roberts into the lineage was based on an undocumented pedigree chart which was probably provided by Arthur Onslow in which the names Robert and John were confused.
One of the last things Donna Siemiatkoski (former Foote Family Genealogy book editor) did before her death was to provide the Foote Family Association of America with an update to our English Ancestry.

The following "notes" from Donna provide a synopsis of how some of the changes to the ancestry previously published by Abram Foote were discovered.
- Arthur Onslow, son-in-law of Sir Thomas Foote, who served as Sheriff of London in 1643 and Lord Mayor in 1650, fist cousin of Nathaniel provided information to the Herald on the Foote Family. He probably reported the information from memory of conversations about his wife's relatives and he made an error. The herald's report was undocumented - no proof of Onslow's statements.
- George Rickword reported on this pedigree to Henery Waters for his Genealogical Gleanings in England, (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Company, Inc.: 1901, Volume II, P. 1285). Herald's reports are usually accurate.
- Waters published the pedigree of Sir Thomas Foote, first cousin of Nathaniel, not knowing it had an error in the earlier generations. Waters is considered a reliable source.
- Abram Foote used Waters work to construct Nathaniel's pedigree, not realizing it was in error. Abram did publish the will of John Foote, not realizing he was the grandfather of Nathaniel.
- Jean Valore read the will of John Foote carefully, checked related data, and disclosed the error.

Note: "The Harold" spoke of by Authur Onslow would most likely be a reference to the "College of Heraldry" in London. The Heralds keep track of Londons' Coats-of-Arms.

John Foote of Royston was one of our oldest confirmed ancestors. He was born about the year 1530 in the town of Royston, Hertfordshire, England.. He owned a small manor house along with some land in the town. John was the father of Robert Foote of Shalford, and the Grand Father of Nathaniel Foote the Settler. John died before. January 1558/59 in Royston, , Hertfordshire, England.
He married Helen Warren Abt. 1548, daughter of Richard Warren and Alice Jenway. She was born Abt. 1529 in Bassingbourn, Cambridgshire, Eng. Helen was born 1527, In Bassingbourn, Cambridge, England. Her death was recorded at St. Leonard,N/E Chapel, London,England.

Robert was the first son of John Foote of Royston. He is our second generation ancestor in England. He was born before 1552 in Royston, Hertfordshire, England, and died January 28, 1607/08 in London, England.(Colchester,Essex)
A Yoeman in old England was a Freeholder, next under the rank of Gentleman, and in the early times one who owned small landed estate. Robert of Shalford was such a man. He owned property in Shalford and Royston. He was the son of John Foote of London and the father of Nathaniel Foote the Settler.
He married Joan Brooke June 18, 1576 in St Leonard's Eastcheap, London, Eng, daughter of John Brooke and Elizabeth Watman. She was born June 18, 1559 in London, England, and died October 10, 1634 in St Leonard's Parish, London, England. She was a member of the leatherseller company of London.
